Paper marbling has been around for centuries, with forms of it appearing as early as the 10th century, traveling from East Asia to the Islamic world and through the Silk Road to Europe in the 17th century. From there marbling was brought to America in the late 18th century by Benjamin Franklin in the form of $20 bank notes and promissory notes for security purposes. Since then and not too long ago, acrylic paint was invented in Germany in the 1930’s. Over the centuries and decades artists have been pushing the boundaries of their materials. Thus acrylic marbling was born and is still being toyed with by marblers across the world, advancing the craft to ever growing use and accessibility.
Fox has been the assistant and apprentice of Chena River Marblers for 2 years, training in both traditional and contemporary marbling. This ongoing apprenticeship has strengthened his commitment to teaching marbling as Dan and Regina St. John have for almost 4 decades.
