Who Am I?

My name is Fox Allen Maasch, born and raised in Maine, currently based in Boston, Massachusetts

What Am I?

I am a bookbinder by trade, currently in my final year of the bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School located in the North End of Boston. I have partaken in private lessons at the Wide Awake Garage with Daniel E. Kelm in Easthampton, MA. I learned the art of paper marbling through an apprenticeship with Chena River Marblers in Amherst, MA, where I participated in teachings, production and research of both historic watercolor and modern acrylic techniques.

What Am I Doing?

Beyond finishing my education at NBSS, I regularly take repair projects to fill my time. I aspire to increase my collaborative project intake with artists across media.

As well as my private bindery I am the co-director of Heirloom & Heritage alongside my amazing other half Amor Amenkum.

Where Did I Come From?

My past has crossed many paths, I’ve done a bit of this that and everything in between.

I bound my first book while I was attending the pre-college program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in the summer of 2012. It was a basic coptic stitch with printer paper and the recycled covers of a 1970’s era book I found in the garbage. I fell in love with the craft and process. From there I graduated high school from Waynflete School in Portland, Maine in 2015. While at Waynflete I took my first course in the practice of book arts as a whole, from its content to its form and function. Over these years I had practiced and self taught myself whatever I could get my hands on. After high school I attended Simmons University to study studio arts and chemistry. During my stay at Simmons I discovered the North Bennet Street School and realized my true passions could turn into a career. I spent 5 years working in various sectors (from line cook to early childcare to manufacturing parts for space crafts and more) to make my dreams come true. As I am now finishing my time as a student at NBSS I am growing my bindery, my business and my network of colleagues and collaborators. I strive to produce the finest crafted books for the clients who come my way.
